desirous of catering for the increasing length and draught of steamers bringing cargo to this Port, have in contemplation the building of a new wharf to be over 650 feet in length, but they hesitate to commence such an undertaking owing to the fact that the depth of water at the approaches to their present wharves is insufficient to allow of vessels having a greater draught than 28 feet to make use of them, and this would also be the case with the projected new wharf. I forward chart which shows depth of water in the neighbourhood. That our Harbour is in many parts gradually silting up is evidenced by the amount of silt churned up from the bottom whenever a steamer of deep draught gets under way, and that a large amount of soil is constantly deposited there- -in after every heavy shower is clearly shown by the discolour- -ation to be seen spreading over the Harbour whenever such
occurs.
Shortly before his departure I had a conversation with Sir Henry May on this subject, and he undoubtedly was in agreement with me, and requested me to write to him on the matter. I was unable to do so before he had left, so that I have now to address you Sir thereon and I would take this opportunity of impressing upon you the urgency thereof.
